WhatsApp Gets Fingerprint Lock Feature On Android's

WhatsApp Gets Fingerprint Lock Feature On Android

WhatsApp on Thursday announced the launch of Fingerprint Lock for Android. With the move, the Facebook-owned company is finally bringing biometric authentication to the Android app, with iPhone users enjoying both Touch ID (fingerprint recognition) and Face ID (facial recognition) since February this year. With the feature, Android users can now have the app lock automatically, and unlock only with their fingerprint. The move comes at a time WhatsApp is making headlines thanks to a recent hack, and its fallout including a lawsuit against spyware-maker NSO Group alleged to have made the hack possible.

Just like the Touch ID feature enabled for iPhone users, WhatsApp for Android users can now choose to lock the app – with their fingerprints as authentication to unlock it thereafter. Users can also choose how much time the app will automatically lock in, from immediately after closing, to after 1 minute, and after 30 minutes. Users will also be able to choose whether the content of their messages will be visible in notifications, including the sender of the message.

Millions of Masks Distributed to Students in 'Gas Chamber' Delhi

Millions of Masks Dis
tributed to Students in 'Gas Chamber'  Delhi

Five million masks are being distributed at schools in India's capital, Delhi, after pollution made the air so toxic officials were forced to declare a public health emergency.

A Supreme Court-mandated panel imposed several restrictions in the city and two neighbouring states, as air quality deteriorated to "severe" levels.

Dangerous particulate levels in the air are about 20 times the WHO maximum.

The city's schools have also been closed until at least next Tuesday.

All construction has been halted for a week and fireworks have been banned. From Monday, the city will introduce a temporary scheme so that only cars with odd or even numbered licence plates can drive on given days, in a bid to cut traffic pollution.

Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the city had been turned into a "gas chamber".

One of the main reasons for air quality in the city worsening every year in November and December is that farmers in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana burn crop stubble to clear their fields. It's made worse by the fireworks during the Hindu festival of Diwali.

There are other reasons too, including construction dust, factory and vehicular emissions, but farm fires remain the biggest culprit.

Twitter To Ban Political Ads In Apparent Swipe At Facebook

Twitter To Ban Political Ads In Apparent Swipe At Facebook

Twitter will ban political advertising on its platform next month, the company's chief executive said on Wednesday, a move that won praise from Democrats and scorn from Donald Trump's presidential campaign.

"We've made the decision to stop all political advertising on Twitter globally," said Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in a statement. "We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought."

Analysts do not expect the ban, which takes effect on November 22, to significantly reduce Twitter's business. Its shares fell 1.9 percent in after-hours trading.

Nigerian Customs Seize 32 Containers Of Expired Rice

Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday impounded 32 containers of expired rice imported through the Tincan port, Apapa in Lagos.

An official told PREMIUM TIMES that the rice, which had expired since 2018, were imported from China and Thailand and were about to be smuggled into the Nigerian market.

Hameed Ali, the Controller General of Customs, while inspecting one of the containers found some empty bags with new dates, apparently, to be used to rebag the expired rice.

The discovery comes barely a day after five containers laden with rotten fish and other edibles were discovered in one of the terminals in the Apapa area. Read the report below.

Google Maps Now Shows Speed Traps On iOS

iPhone users who want to avoid the police can now hit up Google Maps before they hit the gas. Google is rolling out the ability to report speed traps, crashes and slowdowns in real time to its Maps iOS app, making the new feature available to about 1 billion existing users worldwide. It was already available on Android phones, as well as on Google's other map app, Waze, which has a fraction of the users.

But US law enforcement has been critical of using this type of technology to report checkpoints to identify those under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and other types of police presence, something they say heightens safety risks on the road.

"Revealing the location of checkpoints puts those drivers, their passengers, and the general public at risk," wrote the New York Police Department in a letter to Google in February, demanding that Waze stop alerting users to those locations.

It's the latest wrinkle in the sometimes rocky relationship between law enforcement and tech companies in recent years. Most giant tech firms tout a mixture of free speech, privacy and ease of use as pillars of their services and devices, values that don't always align with helping the police crack a case.

Israel's Netanyahu Gives Up Effort to Form New Government

Israel's  Netanyahu Gives Up Effort to Form New Government

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced he is giving up his effort to form a new government after failing to form a coalition following an inconclusive parliamentary election last month.

Netanyahu, who heads the right-wing Likud party and faces potential indictment in three corruption cases, had hoped to form a broad "unity" government with his main rival, former military chief Benny Gantz.

But on Monday the 70-year-old said he had come up short, announcing in a video posted on his official Facebook page that despite working "tirelessly" to establish an administration with Gantz he had been repeatedly rebuffed.

"During the past few weeks, I made every effort to bring Benny Gantz to the negotiating table. Every effort to establish a broad national unity government, every effort to prevent another election," Netanyahu said. "To my regret, time after time he declined. He simply refused."

Netanyahu said he was consequently returning the "mandate" to President Reuven Rivlin. Rivlin said he will now hold consultations with the various political parties to tell them he intends to task Gantz with the job of putting together a new government.

Google To Fix ‘Bug’ That Allows Iphone Users To Upload Original Quality Images For Free

Google recently made the news for a rather odd “bug” that allows iPhone users to have unlimited cloud storage to back up photos at ‘Original Quality'. The bug is related to Apple's HEIC image format and the size of an HEIC image would actually increase if Google Photos tried to compress it for storage on the cloud. Google has acknowledged the bug, and has promised a fix, but it's unclear how Google will fix the problem and do justice to users of its own smartphones.

A loophole discovered recently allows iPhone users unlimited backups at ‘Original Quality' when using the HEIC image format. The format has been described as ‘too efficient', and Google would actually increase the file size if it tried to compress the image files, apart from wasting computing resources on compressing the billions of images clicked on iPhones and stored in the HEIC format. If users opt for the JPG format, the loophole doesn't work.

Chrome 77 For Android Gets Google's 'Site Isolation' Feature

Chrome 77 For Android Gets Google's 'Site Isolation' Feature

Chrome 77 for Android has received the 'Site Isolation' feature that Google initially rolled out to desktop users through Chrome 67 back in July last year. The new feature helps defend users majorly against attacks that could leverage the Spectre vulnerability to gain sensitive data access from a process. Initially, the Site Isolation feature on Android devices is enabled only for "high-value sites" where users log in using a password. The search giant, however, does have the plan to optimise the feature and expand its presence to further enhance security for Chrome users on the Android platform.

As detailed last year, the Site Isolation feature designed to isolate the browser from rendering the content of each website opened on the system and use a dedicated process for every single site. This restricts the sharing of processes between multiple sites and helps avoid attacks driven by vulnerabilities such as Spectre that was disclosed last year.

Samsung Is Pouring $11 Billion Into Next-Generation Displays

Samsung Is Pouring $11 Billion Into Next-Generation Displays

Samsung Display plans to spend KRW 13.1 trillion ($11 billion) developing and building next-generation displays, responding to a flood of supply and price pressure from fast-moving Chinese rivals.

In an announcement event attended by South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Samsung Electronics Vice-Chairman Jay Lee, the investment was presented as a move to reorganize the display industry while maintaining Samsung's global lead and Korea's established dominance. The government will invest about KRW 400 billion into next-generation displays to propel that objective, Moon said.

The Samsung unit will build a quantum-dot display production line in Asan, according to a company statement, which will begin operations from 2021 with an initial monthly capacity of 30,000 panels larger than 65 inches. Production will then scale up from there, with a long-term development plan that stretches out to 2025. The investment will help create 81,000 jobs, the company added.

Samsung and cross-town rival LG Display are grappling with a surge of competition from Chinese suppliers, such as BOE Technology Group, which in recent years have ramped up liquid crystal display-making capacity and are increasingly making inroads into next-generation screens. To offset a decline in margins and loss of clients, Samsung is moving forward with development of quantum-dot displays. Its stock ended Thursday largely unchanged.

Ethiopia PM Abiy Ahmed Ali Wins peace Nobel

Ethiopia PM Abiy Ahmed Ali Wins peace Nobel

The prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 will be awarded to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia, the Nobel Committee announced on Friday.

Mr. Ali has been selected for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular, for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea, a statement from the Committee said. The prize is also meant to recognise all the stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions.

"When Prime Minister Abiy reached out his hand, President Afwerki grasped it, and helped to formalise the peace process between the two countries," the statement said.

Ethiopia is a country of many different languages and peoples. Lately, old ethnic rivalries have flared up. According to international observers, up to three million Ethiopians may be internally displaced. That is in addition to the million or so refugees and asylum seekers from neighbouring countries. As Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed has sought to promote reconciliation, solidarity and social justice. However, many challenges remain unresolved.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee believes it is now that Abiy Ahmed’s efforts deserve recognition and need encouragement, the statement said.

Bluetooth technology

Many think that they know #Bluetooth very well.....Bluetooth technology allows users to exchange voice and data transmissions between 2 or more electronic devices, given that all the devices are within a short distance from one another. There are numerous ways to use Bluetooth technology, such as connecting a hands-free Bluetooth earpiece with your cell phone to make phone calls while you drive, pairing a Bluetooth printer with your computer to eliminate the presence of extra cords and cables in your office, and more. See Step 1 below to learn how to get the most out of your Bluetooth-capable devices.
Part One of Two:
Getting Started with Bluetooth
Learn what Bluetooth does. Bluetooth is a wireless connectivity tool that allows you to "pair" your devices so that they can interact with each other. For example, you can pair a headset with most smartphones, allowing you to talk without touching your phone. You can pair a gaming controller to a computer or console so you don't have to worry about the cord. You can send music to a Bluetooth-enabled speaker from your smartphone or laptop without having to connect them, or set up a home theater system without running speaker wire everywhere.
Bluetooth has a maximum range of about 30 feet.
Bluetooth transfer speeds top out at about 24 Mbps.
Check if your devices are Bluetooth-capable. Bluetooth has been around for a long time (about 20 years), and is the market leader in wireless connectivity. Chances are that your wireless device comes with Bluetooth support. The big exception to this is desktop computers. While nearly all laptops will have Bluetooth built-in, most desktops do not include it. You will need to purchase a Bluetooth dongle if you want to connect your desktop computer to Bluetooth devices.
Many modern cars now have Bluetooth capabilities, allowing you to pair your phone while you are driving.
Virtually every smartphone is able to pair with Bluetooth devices.
Many newer printers are Bluetooth-capab
le, and can print wirelessly across the room.
Learn the capabilities of your Bluetooth devices. Every Bluetooth device has either single or multiple functionalities. For example, some cell phones may only allow you to use Bluetooth for making phone calls; whereas other cell phones may also allow you to transfer files to and from other cell phones. Every Bluetooth device has slightly different functionality.
Review the manuals or consult with the manufacturers for your electronic devices to determine the ways in which you can use their Bluetooth technology.
Pair your Bluetooth devices. In order to use Bluetooth technology, you must connect your devices to one another wirelessly, also known as "pairing". The pairing process varies from device to device, but generally you will have one device that is "listening", and then the secondary device gets put into pairing mode. For example, if you are pairing a headset to a phone, your phone would be in "listen" mode, and the headset would be put into "pairing" mode. The phone would then "discover" the headset, and the connection would be established.
Follow the instructions provided with your Bluetooth devices to complete the pairing process. In most cases, you will be required to perform a series of specific steps that will result in the pairing of your devices.
When pairing devices, you typically will be asked for a PIN before the connection is made. If a PIN was never set, the default is usually 0000 .
Pairing typically only needs to be done once. AS long as Bluetooth is enabled on the devices, future connections will happen automatically.
Part Two of Two:
Using Bluetooth Technology
Transfer files between devices. Some Bluetooth devices will allow you to transfer files and documents from one device to another. For example, if your friend has a bunch of good pictures on their camera, you can pair it with your phone to quickly get copies of them. [1]
Transfer files between cellphones, cameras and camcorders, computers, televisions, and more.
Use Bluetooth technology to talk on the phone . Bluetooth earpieces can be paired with some land-line telephones or cellphones so you can talk on the phone without having to hold its receiver. This is especially useful if you find yourself on the phone a lot for work and don't want to have to fish it out every time you get a call.
Tether your phone to your computer . Tethering your device allows you to share your phone's mobile network connection with your computer. This lets you browse the internet on your computer without having to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Not all services allow tethering, so check with your mobile carrier. Sometimes extra fees are required. [2]
Use Bluetooth to drive safer. Enable the Bluetooth technology built directly into your automobile or wear a Bluetooth earpiece when you drive so you can keep both hands placed on the steering wheel. In some regions, it is illegal to hold a cell phone in your hand and talk while you are driving. Bluetooth will allow you to talk on your phone while driving without breaking the law.
Certain phones and car stereos will allow you to play music over the car stereo when connected to the phone via Bluetooth
Synchronize data between your Bluetooth devices . Some devices will allow you to synchronize data such as contact lists, emails, and calendar events between one another. This can be a great way to sync your phone contacts with your computer, or to transfer data to another phone.
Use Bluetooth equipment in your home office . Bluetooth devices can significantly decrease tangled cables, and allow you to work more freely. Bluetooth keyboards and mice allow you to type from anywhere without sacrificing accuracy. Bluetooth printers allow you to place the printer wherever you'd like without having to worry about stretching a cable from the printer to your computer.
Use Bluetooth devices to customize your home theater. Bluetooth speakers and remotes can make controlling and interacting with your media much easier. With a Bluetooth remote, you don't need to point it at the TV to use it. Bluetooth speakers allow you to set up a surround sound system without having to run speaker wires all over your living room. In order to set up a Bluetooth home theater system, you will need a Bluetooth-capab
le receiver.
Use Bluetooth to secure your house or car. Bluetooth technology is available in wireless entry systems that can unlock your home or car with the tap of a button on your smartphone. You'll never have to search for missing keys again! Check your local hardware store for Bluetooth-capable deadbolt systems, or contact your local car stereo store to ask about Bluetooth car lock mechanisms. [3]
Connect a PlayStation controller to your computer . If your computer is Bluetooth-capable, you can connect a PlayStation 3 or 4 controller to use a gamepad for your PC games. This is not supported by Sony, and requires the use of third-party software, but is relatively easy to set up.
Play multiplayer games . Bluetooth allows you to create a local network between two phones, which is a quick and easy way to set up a multiplayer gaming session. Although this only works if you're in the same room, it's much more reliable than trying to game over the internet.

Google to Unveil 5G Pixel Phone on October 15 to Beat Apple to the Punch

Google to Unveil 5G Pixel Phone on October 15 to Beat Apple to the Punch

Google could unveil its first 5G phone alongside the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL at the hardware event on October 15, according to a media report. The 5G phone by the search giant is likely to make the competition tougher for the 5G-supported iPhone models that are speculated to debut in 2020. It would also take on the 5G developments by rival handset makers such as Samsung and Huawei. The 5G phone by Google, which is rumoured to arrive as the Pixel 4 XL 5G, would have top-of-the-line specifications, including as much as 8GB of RAM -- the highest capacity in the Pixel family.

The 5G phone is currently being test produced in China, though it will eventually be manufactured outside Chine to avoid the ongoing US-China tariff dispute, according to a report by Nikkei Asian Review, citing people familiar with the development. The company is expected to formally announce its 5G model at the forthcoming hardware event. However, it is said that the smartphone would be launched in Spring next year -- alongside a budget Pixel phone.

By launching in Spring next year, Google would be able to beat Apple that is speculated to unveil its 5G-enabled iPhone models in the later part of 2020.

The Google 5G phone is said to come with the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. A recently spotted Geekbench listing hinted at 8GB of RAM on the 5G model that could debut as the Pixel 4 XL 5G.

Black Microsoft Surface Headphones Appear in neaked Promotional Video

Black Microsoft Surface Headphones Appear in neaked Promotional Video

Microsoft could be preparing to release its Surface Headphones in a new black color scheme, according to a new promotional video leaked online. The video shows off many of the features that can already be found on the existing gray Surface Headphones, including dials that control volume and active noise cancellation, suggesting you're not getting any new functionality alongside the new color scheme.

The new promotional video has emerged a year after Microsoft first introduced the over-ear Surface Headphones, which, until now, have only been available in gray. The same year the headphones were first announced, Microsoft introduced a matte black Surface Pro. If you've been holding out on buying a pair of Surface Headphones because they don't match your black Surface Pro, then you might not have too much longer to wait.

However, it's not clear when Microsoft might release this new color scheme. The trailer uses the same "Anything but Ordinary" tagline that the company used for its Surface event this week, but the only audio gear the company announced at the event were the $249 Surface Earbuds, which are available in both light and dark gray color schemes. With a slick ad already produced for the black variant, it feels like Microsoft could be ready to announce its new headphones any day now.

Facebook, Instagram Remove Accounts From Nigeria, Egypt, UAE, Give Reasons

Facebook has removed hundreds of accounts, pages and groups from its social network platforms over alleged involvement in coordinated inauthentic behaviour.

The tech giant said it removed a total of 443 Facebook and 125 Instagram accounts, as well as 200 pages and 76 groups originating in the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Nigeria and Indonesia.

In a blog post on Thursday, Facebook said that one of the operations was sharing local news in targeted countries and promoting content about UAE as well as criticism of Qatar, Turkey and Iran, NAN reports.

A smaller operation was involved in "domestic-focused coordinated inauthentic behaviour in Indonesia," with fake accounts sharing content in support of the independence movement in West Papua province, while others posted criticism of it.

A third operation, originating in Egypt, focused on Somalia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Yemen, Tunisia, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon and Qatar, the social media company said.

The fake accounts "typically posted about domestic news and political topics including content in support of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

1,800 Litres Of "Fake Blood" Sprayed on UK Treasury by Climate Activists

1,800 Litres Of👉 "Fake Blood" Sprayed on UK Treasury by Climate Activists

Climate change activists used a fire engine to spray red paint at the facade of the British finance ministry on Thursday in an attempt to draw attention to what they said was the government's failure to avert a looming climate cataclysm.

The activists drove up to the British Treasury in a fire engine and sprayed red paint through the hose onto the building, though at one point they lost control of the hose.

After the stunt, four activists stood atop the fire engine which had a banner saying "Stop funding climate death." The steps of the Treasury were soaked in red paint.

Extinction Rebellion said its activists had sprayed 1,800 litres of fake blood at the Treasury. The activists also sprayed the slogan "Stop funding climate death" on the walls of the building.

Police said they arrested four people on suspicion of criminal damage and that some roads had been closed. At the scene, police puzzled over what to do with the fire engine as the driver removed the keys.

The fire engine was purchased on eBay, the activists told Reuters.

Iphone 11 Production Raised By Around 10 Percent

Iphone 11 Production Raised By Around 10 Percent

.

Apple has asked suppliers to increase production of its iPhone 11 models by up to 8 million units, or about 10 percent, Nikkei Asian Review reported on Friday, citing better than expected demand.

"Previously, Apple was quite conservative about placing orders", which were less than for last year's new iPhone, said the Nikkei quoting a source.

"After the increase, prepared production volume for the iPhone 11 series will be higher compared to last year".

Sources cited by Nikkei said that the recent surge in iPhone orders is concentrated in the cheapest iPhone 11 model and the iPhone 11 Pro model, while Apple has slightly revised down orders for its top range model, the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which has a starting price of $1,099 (Rs. 1,09,900 in India).

The newspaper also reported that suppliers remain cautious and said they were concerned that the higher level of orders would not be sustained.

Huawei Phones Lose Bootleg Access To Google Apps

Huawei Phones Lose Bootleg Access To
Google Apps

One of Huawei Technologies's biggest trade war headaches has just gotten worse, as an unofficial workaround to the Trump administration ban on using Google apps and services has been quashed.

Security researcher John Wu published an illuminating post Tuesday that explained how users of Huawei's Mate 30 Pro were able to manually download and install Google apps, despite a US blacklisting that prohibits the Chinese company from using American components and software. The process allowed the Mate 30 Pro (along with the basic Mate 30) to run popular apps like Google Maps and Gmail that otherwise would not be permitted.

In the wake of Wu's revelations, the Mate 30 devices lost their clearance to manually install Android apps, as reported by a number of smartphone experts. Only Google is able to make that kind of change through what's known as its SafetyNet anti-abuse check.

"Although this 'backdoor' requires user interaction to be enabled, the installer app, which is signed with a special certificate from Huawei, was granted privileges nowhere to be found on standard Android systems," Wu wrote on Medium.

Russia Arrests More Than 260 North Korean Fishermen

Russian border guards have seized three North Korean fishing vessels and 262 crew members for poaching in waters that Moscow considers its exclusive economic zone.

The crew and vessels, as well as several motorboats, were taken to Russia's Far East port of Nakhodka and border guards have seized 30,000 squid as well as illegal fishing equipment, the Interfax news agency reported on Friday.

It is the second such incident this month.

Russia arrested two North Korean boats in its territorial waters in the Sea of Japan on September 17 after one of them attacked a Russian patrol.

In that incident, Russia said it seized one of the vessels for poaching, prompting a second boat to open fire.

Several border guards and alleged poachers were hurt and one of the North Koreans later died from his wounds.

Nasa Confirms✔ Ocean Moon Mission

Scientists working on an audacious mission to the ocean world of Europa can proceed with the final design and construction of the spacecraft, Nasa says.

The Europa Clipper mission will target the ice-encrusted moon of Jupiter, which is considered a prime target in the search for life beyond Earth.

Below its icy shell, Europa is thought to hold a 170km-deep body of water.

This could have the right conditions for biology.

Due to launch in 2025, the Europa Clipper mission has now passed a stage called Key Decision Point C, a crucial marker on the road to the launch pad.

"We are all excited about the decision that moves the Europa Clipper mission one key step closer to unlocking the mysteries of this ocean world," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for Nasa's science mission directorate.
Google's Password Checkup Extension May Soon Be Built Into Chrome

The leak detection feature of Password Checkup, which checks if a user's password is compromised and alerts the users by a drop-down menu box, appears set to soon become a default feature of Google Chrome browser instead of remaining an optional extension.

"According to the Chromium Bug Tracker, Google is looking to change things by integrating Password Checkup's leak detection directly into Chrome. While the design documents are currently private, there are enough code changes available to piece together how it should work," 9to5Google reported on Thursday.

Earlier this year the Internet giant unveiled its Password Checkup extension which is essentially a step up from services such as "Have I Been Pwned" that offer insight into whether or not a user's password has ever been compromised during a data breach.

For those who do not want Google checking for password safety, they will allow to disable these Password Checkup features from the Chrome browser.

Primarily, this is being done for the sake of enterprise customers, but the setting will likely also be available for others also, the report added.

But, what was the objective? Well, the purpose was to let users sign in to a Web service by using the fingerprint sensor or local password of their Android phone, and this is now finally a reality.

Google has started rolling out support for FIDO2-based local user verification for Google Accounts, which means users can now sign in to a web service by using the fingerprint sensor or the PIN of their supported phone, instead of remembering a complex password.

Google has announced via a blog post that users can now verify their identity for Google services by using the fingerprint sensor, PIN or pattern lock of their supported Android smartphones.

As of now, the feature is available only on Pixel smartphones and will soon be rolled out to more Android phones running version 7.0 (Nougat) or a higher build of Google's operating system. Currently, Pixel phone users can visit Google's password manager dashboard and tap on any of the websites or services listed on the page to check the new interface.
